Roots ‘n Roll
Roots: n an origin or source. Roll: n. a continuous reverberatory sound.
Roots ‘n Roll is a 13X30 minute television documentary / music series hosted by veteran music journalist Chas. Hay. After 6 years, more than 400 interviews, and 5 CCMA awards, the producer and host of television’s Inside Country has created another music-based program titled Roots ‘n Roll. The focus of the series is roots music: be it folk, country, blues, roots-rock, alt.country, soul, Americana, hillbilly, Celtic, gospel, etc. Through intimate and in-depth interviews supported by exclusive performances and music video clips, Roots ‘n Roll is the source for roots music for people around the world.
With the success of a couple of roots albums, the soundtrack from “O Brother Where Art Thou” and the Dixie Chicks’ “Home,” the timing couldn’t be better for a music series that explores real music. Artists featured include: Billy Joe Shaver, Shawn Colvin, Rodney Crowell, B.B. King, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Delbert McClinton, The Derailers, Charlie Robison, Kelly Willis, Steve Forbert, Robert Cray, Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Harmer, Colin Linden, John Wesley Harding, Kevin Gordon, BR549, Junior Brown.
The theme music for the program is written and performed by Bob Egan (Wilco, Blue Rodeo). Viewers will not only learn all about the artists but also recommended recordings and inside info on recordings.
Roots ‘n Roll is edgy, hip, intelligent, entertaining, and informative.
“It’s a rare treat to see artists of this caliber get the attention they deserve, in a manner that’s often insightful, sensitive and informed.”- Paul Cantin, Canoe.ca
